Slides.com Companion — case study

Role: Concept and development. Year: 2021.

Website: chromewebstore.google.com

A Chrome and Edge extension that adds to Slides.com, for free, the features missing without a subscription: downloading any presentation as a PDF, the speaker view and speaker notes.

You are viewing this case study with the Legacy engine. To see it as it was designed, enable native rendering below.

The missing PDF

Slides.com is a service for creating and showing presentations online, but PDF export is only in the paid plans.

The extension adds the download of any presentation as a PDF, for free. It started as Slides.com Downloader and became Slides.com Companion, built to hold more features.

Inside the extension

  • A content script works on the presentation page.
  • The PDF is made with the browser's print command, with no outside services.
  • A Vue popup and a background script, all written in TypeScript.
  • It runs on Chrome and Edge, and is published on the Chrome Web Store.

Speaker view and notes

  • A sliding bar on the edge of the slides, with three buttons: Print, Speaker and Notes.
  • The speaker view, which Slides.com doesn't offer without a subscription: the current slide, the next one, the notes and the time, in a window to keep on your own screen. It uses the one from Reveal.js, which Slides.com is built on.
  • Speaker notes for every slide, written in the extension and saved as you type: they show up right away in the speaker view.
  • Rebuilt on WXT, with tests: the notes are in the latest version, on GitHub, waiting to reach the store.
